Agriculture in the Classroom

AITC-M at Discover Ag in the City 2013

For Immediate Release
Farmers + Innovation = Sustainability
(Winnipeg, MB March 13, 2013) – An energetic group of young Winnipeg students will kick off Discover Agriculture in the City at the Forks Market in Winnipeg on Friday, March 15th at 9:30am. Discover Ag in the City gives the opportunity for students and adults alike to connect with agricultural representatives from across the industry. From the farm gate to the products they eat and use everyday, they will learn that Agriculture is all around you! Living in the city may feel a long way from the farm, but every day we eat, wear, drive, or touch a piece of agriculture.
The big event during the Friday morning kickoff will be a student public speaking competition, with the winning student receiving an all expense paid trip to compete against other winning students from across Canada at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in November.  Contestants will “speak up for agriculture” by presenting on one of the following topics:
• What does food security mean to Canadians?
• Farmers’ three most important technologies are . . .
• Does the family farm need help?
• In the year 2050, here’s what agriculture will look like . . .
• Reading, writing and agriculture: should agriculture be in the curriculum?
Over 30 students from Winnipeg high schools will form the audience. Following the speaking competition, the students will take part in a Discover Agriculture Adventure.  Students will work their way through the agriculture booths on display answering questions and gathering clues.  Once they have gathered all of the clues they will work to decode the answer and quickly text it in to win great prizes.
“Agriculture in the Classroom – Manitoba is dedicated to cultivating an interest in agriculture.  This is easy as agriculture is such an integral part of Manitoba’s culture and an important part of everyday life.” says executive director Johanne Ross.  “We enjoy engaging students through interactive, hands-on experiences that get them up close and personal with agriculture. The speech competition will bring a unique perspective and should be very informative and a lot of fun! We are thrilled to play a strong role at the Agriculture in the City event in Winnipeg.”
Everyone is invited to visit Agriculture in the City at the Forks Market to take our nutrition test! How much energy is in your plant food? Come and find out at AITC-M’s display all three days.
